Basic Drawing Material

For pencil drawing works, you can use a dough eraser with various soft pencils as well as charcoal pencils or fuser-like materials. So you can balance the light and shade distribution in your drawings and fix errors more easily. 

To begin with, work with hard “H” like pencils, and as your drawing develops it will help you use softer pencils and balance the light and shade distribution. 

Of course, your choice of paper is also very important. Your drawing will look more attractive to you as textured paper will keep more pencil marks on them.

Portrait In Pencil Drawing

Human heads drawn in pencil portraits may show changes. For example, adult head size and child head size are different. But there are generally accepted rates. For example, the ratio of the side parts of the head from the front profile to head height is 2/3. Likewise, the ratio in the side profile is 7/8.

•  Let's divide the head part into four equal pieces both from the front profile and side profile.

As can be seen very clearly in the above sample drawings, the boundary line inside the hair remains in the first quarter, the middle line is from the upper border of the eyes passing, the third line passes through the middle of the lip and nose. The last line crosses the lower border of the jaw. If we draw a line from the middle of the third and fourth line, it passes from the lower border of the lip.

In the example above, when we divide vertically into five equal parts, from the borders of the two and three right eyes, the nostrils of the three and fourth line, the side of the nose it passes through its borders, the side borders of the left eye on line four and five. On the side profile, if we draw a line from the middle of the four and fifth line on the head, which is divided into 4 equal parts, we see that it crosses the lower lip border and the lower border of the nose. Also the third line in the side profile is from the upper border of the ear, while the extension is it passes through the upper limit of the eyes.

As seen in the drawing above, firstly it is necessary to notice that the lower border of the eye and the upper border are different from each other. Besides, it is necessary to think of the eye round as circular in order to place the eye round and the lens correctly. One of the most difficult drawings in pencil portrait is the nose drawings. First of all, we need to remove the external lines of the nose drawings carefully.
